Fish Week recap

This past week we had a three day service porject that took us all over to serve the community. We went to Serrv International to help promote fair trade goods from thrid world countries. We helped with a VBS at a church who ministers to a homeless population (we went to a water park too). On Friday we weeded the middle school, helped make planter kits, and made Happy Hats for kids battleing cancer and undering chemo. There was put out and tie dye too. There was so much service and fun packed into three days. What a blast.

Saturday, April 25 morning in the Middletown Area
This is a county event and we will be cleaning up along the side of a safe road in the Middletown area. we will be provided with gloves, trash bags, etc. for cleanup. This is one for the whole family and can be a lot of fun. Our group will also be raising funds for Hospice Camp Jamie-a weekend camp for children age 6-14 who have recently had a loss and are grieving. Registration is $6-if registered by April 6, next Sunday-you will recieve a t-shirt. Pledge forms are available for you to ask family, friends, neighbors, etc. to contribute to this cause. A pizza lunch will be provided following the event.

Has anyone ever heard of FreeRice.com? I learned about it yesterday in my Spanish class. It’s a website where you can practice/test your knowledge in subjects such as Algebra, Art History, World Geography, Science, and four different languages! For every question you answer right, the website has sponsors who will donate 20 grains of rice to hungry nations. You can see how much rice you donate on the right- it fills up in a bowl. Now, 20 grains of rice may seem like not too much- only about a half-palmful. But yesterday, 159,032,620 grains of rice were donated— and over 59 million grains were donated since the website opened in October of 2007. That’s about 7,000 people fed per day.

Another great site is GoodSearch.com– run by Yahoo. Also a “click-to-donate” site, GoodSearch is a search engine. Before you start, you can choose your charity (I chose UMCOR) to donate to. For every search, GoodSearch donates 1 cent to that charity. Once again- this may not seem like much, but the average person donates $7,300 per year!!!

So, the next time you need to practice your French, or find information for a research project, why not try these websites? You’re getting your homework done, and saving the world and the same time!
