If I were in charge

What if you were in charge of church for a week/weekend?

How would worship be different? What would bible study be like?   What questions would the sermon try to answer?  How would you do it?  who would be there?  What would the mission of the church be? Why would people come?

If I could write a sermon, I think it would be about keeping faith in God. A lot of the time we ask ourselves questions like “How do we know God is there?” and “He’s written about in a book- any other proof?”. Or, at least I find myself pondering that thought once in awhile. I don’t know how it would be answered, but I just tell myself that God is here and was here and will always be here. I just think it would be an interesting topic to cover.

Oh- one last thing. It would be totally radical to have a Veggie Tales themed Fuel Service. I just thought of that. We could sing Veggie Tales songs (did you know there’s a CD out called Bob and Larry Sing the 70s?) and we could eat veggies for dinner.

If I ran the church for a week I’d make the services like our retreat talks. I love how at the retreats we can just ask questions or share our stories right there in the middle of the talk. I’d porbablly open up some room to be like a quiet time for people who need to talk to God or maybe they need to listen to God talk ,and they could come in at any time during the week everyone would just know that it’s open. I think that’s be really cool because sometimes I think people find themselves only kinda feeling God on Sundays , so if there was ever a time during the week when things were just not going too well they’d have a place to come to and pray and just kinda chill with God for however long they want. i dunno i kinda think that’d be something really cool to do.

If I ran the church for a weekend, I would definitely have the services less driven by time and more driven by the spirit. That does not mean that services would be three hours long. Heavens NO! Being Methodist I do believe in order of services; however, I would just have them as guidelines to keep yet letting the holy spirit guide us. I would have a place where people are not afraid to worship and experience the presence, blessings, love, and warmth of God. I believe that God really wants to bless everyone and also wants everyone to feel Him touching their hearts. I cannot give an accurate description of how Bible Study is in MUMC because I haven’t been to one and that’s a fault of mine that I am truly upset with. But bible study for me would be really getting into it and not scraping over the surface. Bible Study is truly analyzing the Bible and reading between the lines to truly convey what God is trying to tell us. My way of calling Bible study is “Bible Breakdown!” If I were to write a sermon I would base it on a quote I heard on religion. Religion by definition is man seeking a god or gods! However there is something fundametally different. Our God is looking for us. My sermon would be about how God looks for us and how he wishes to bless us and only wants us to follow. It is open for everyone. I truly believe in the Methodist motto: Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors. I would keep the same mission statement: to Gather as God’s people, to Grow in faith, love and service in Jesus’ name, and to Go into the world as Spirit-filled disciples. People would come because they truly want to experience the presence of God and all that He has to offer!
